Picnic Fun at Kieng Svay

There's no need to pack any food or drink. The narrow streets of Kien Svay are usually lined with pushcarts and stalls filled with every imaginable type of food on weekends.

Take your time to look at what is available. Mix with the crowd. Enjoy the hustle and bustle, the heat and the colors. Keen for some creepy-crawlies? 52 big brown ones go for approximately US$1. But you need to first forget that you are putting an insect into your mouth otherwise you may not enjoy it.

Bite into it and you'll realize it's absolutely delicious-crunchy with just the right amount of salt. Very yummy indeed . Next, try a silkworm which is looking cozy in its cocoon. The crisp "outsides" belie the soft and tender "insides". The latter practically melts in your mouth and flows smoothly down your throat. You'll have to swallow more than a handful of silkworms before you can satisfy your gastronomic desires! Other exotic and not-so-exotic fare ranges from toasted turtles to rice cakes, barbecued birds and tropical fruits.

Get your fill (chances are you got more than your fill !) and go on down to the stilt huts to enjoy your spread. Mats had been laid out in anticipation of picnickers. If you prefer, you can take a short boat ride across to the stilt huts on the other side of the river. Not enough to eat ? Is that possible ? Don't worry. There is no need to trudge back to the stalls from where you came. Wooden sampans ply the river, offering lobsters, fish and other seafood. Each sampan comes complete with a charcoal stove and barbecue pit ! After that full meal, you may wish to lie back and

catch a snooze. Or you may want to take a lazy one-hour ride up the river. Don't worry, the calm waters will ensure that your river ride is smooth and peaceful.
