SIHANOUK VILLE

Cambodian's only deep-sea port is located here and considerable international aid has been spent to improve the infrastructure in the province. Although tourism has increased over the past few years, the beaches of Sihanoukville are some of the most unspoiled in all of Southeast Asia. It is a prefect tropical getaway, filled with lovely beaches and facilities for swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving or just sunbathing. Boat trips are also available to many of the nearby islands. There are several hotels and local restaurants serving fresh, delicious seafood on the beach. On the weekend, there are many local visitors from Phnom Penh to relax, swimming and enjoy fresh seafood.

ORIENTATION

Sihanoukville is not a small place, and the best way to get around is to hire a motorbike. Sihanoukville itself is east of the main backpackers' beach and close to the more mid-range Ochatial Beach. Due south of town is tiny Ko Pos Beach, which ha a solitary mid-range hotel, and the larger Independence Beach, which has the crumbling Independence Hotel - slated for redevelopment.

SIHANOUKVILLE - BEACH RESORT

Sihanoukville (Also known as Kompong Som) is Cambodia's only port. It is gradually being redeveloped as a tourist attraction, but despite the promise of massive Malaysian investment - a casino is planned for Naga Island - tourist numbers are still fairly low.

The kidnapping and murder of three foreigners on National Road 4 between Phnom Penh

and Sihanoukville in April 1994 was a tragedy that put the redevelopment of Sihanoukville on hold. Today the area is beginning to bounce back.

At present, the chief attractions of Sihanoukville are the three beaches that ring the headland. None of them are a knockout, but if you can organise a boat trip there is reportedly some great snorkeling and diving and sunbathing you are looking for, however, Sihanoukville may be a disappointment

Sokha Beach
Sokha Beach is the most popular beach. It is a high quality beach with many facilities available. So wide that even at high tide it can be enjoyed. Grass and shade from the palm trees will add to your enjoyment. Soft drink vendors, bungalows and even a seafood restaurant are all within walking distance. The southern end which is a short walk offers a rocky point which you may do some snorkeling and even staying dry you might see some marine life at low tide. Enjoy this beach now as construction is planned in the near future.

Ochheuteal Beach
Ochheuteal Beach is developed at one end and quite and peaceful on the other end of this long and narrow beach. Many nice hotels can be found on the developed end along with some great seafood restaurants. Sand fleas can sometimes be a problem so bring some repellent just in case. There are some decaying old building that are worth a look at the quite end of this beautiful beach.

Independence Beach
Independence Beach was named after the long closed down Independence hotel. Although used by weekenders it is less crowded than the other beaches. Long and narrow this beach is better at low tide. The northwest end is better because it's wider there. A seafood restaurant and fresh water lake can be found there but don't swim there as you might meet an old crocodile. A grassy park with many kinds of statues is there for your relaxation as well as a few monkeys along the road to the decaying Independence hotel.

Ream Beach
Located in the Ream National Park. Though not untouristed, the Ream Beaches see far fewer visitors than Sihanoukville beaches. Take Route 4 to the Airport road 18km north of town. Turn right, go 9km to the ocean. The beach to the right is long and narrow and frequented more by fishermen than tourists. Behind the beach is a mangrove swamp, which attracts a wide variety of tropical birds. The beaches to the left nearer the Naval Base now have a few vendors selling drinks and renting tubes. There is a small $5 per night guesthouse run by the National Park.
Check at the park HQ opposite the entrance to the airport.

Otres Beach
Otres is the next beach south of Ochheuteal and in many way resembles Ochheuteal - a 3 kilometer crescent of near white sand - but far less tourist than Ochheuteal. The road over the hill from Ochheuteal (through Queen’s Hill Resort on top of the hill) allowing easy access to Otres is relatively new and the beach is largely undeveloped. There are scattered grass umbrellas along the beach and a few thatch roof beach bars and restaurants clustered toward the near end including the Star Bar offering beachfront bungalows, bar and restaurant, and Otres

Nautical offering water sports equipment - boats, Hobie Waves, kayaks, etc. The new Queens Hill Resort bungalows sits on the hill side at the near end, overlooking the ocean and beach. Otres village and pagoda sit about 1km off the beach. To get there from Ochheuteal Beach follow 1 Kanda Street to the end, turn to the beach road and follow it to the end of Ochheuteal, cross the new bridge and follow the road over the hill to Otres. Dirty road on the Otres side. Or from downtown, take Omui St. southeast about 4km to a fork and turn right. At the next opportunity take a left. It is 2km to the beach. Dirt road much of the way

Other Beaches These ‘other’ beaches are outside of the town area and are frequented more by fishermen than tourists, though this is slowly changing. Road conditions can be challenging, especially in the wet season
